ASX Travel Shares: A Look at Their Post-Pandemic Recovery

How Have ASX Travel Stocks Performed Since the COVID-19 Pandemic?

The COVID-19 pandemic had a massive impact on the ASX travel sector, with share prices plummeting as international and domestic travel came to a halt. It was an unprecedented event, reminding investors of the need to diversify their portfolios. Now, with the pandemic declared over and travel restrictions lifted, how have travel stocks on the ASX fared? Let’s take a look at the post-COVID performance of four key travel equities.

How Has Webjet (ASX: WEB) Recovered Post-COVID?

Webjet Ltd (ASX: WEB) has seen fluctuating performance since travel restrictions eased in early 2022. Starting at approximately AUD 5.30 on February 21, 2022, Webjet's share price surged to AUD 6.90 by December 2022 as travel demand rebounded.

However, rising operational costs and inflationary pressures caused the share price to dip to AUD 4.20 in May 2023. As of September 25, 2024, Webjet’s share price sits at around AUD 5.00, reflecting a 15% year-to-date decline. Despite this, the average daily trading volume of 1.2 million shares suggests strong investor interest in the stock. While challenges remain, the company is still navigating the post-COVID environment with potential for growth as global travel continues to recover.

Why Is Corporate Travel Management (ASX: CTD) Facing Challenges?

Corporate Travel Management Ltd (ASX: CTD) saw an initial recovery after the pandemic, with its share price rising to AUD 21.06 in January 2023 as corporate travel demand increased. However, by September 2024, the stock had dropped to AUD 12.17, marking a 38% year-to-date decline.

The company's share price has been impacted by rising costs and macroeconomic pressures that have affected corporate travel budgets. The average daily trading volume of 688,452 shares reflects ongoing investor uncertainty as Corporate Travel Management adjusts to the post-COVID reality.

Has Qantas (ASX: QAN) Managed to Stay Resilient?

Qantas Airways Limited (ASX: QAN) has shown resilience since the end of travel restrictions, rising from AUD 5.50 in February 2022 to a peak of AUD 7.20 in July 2023. The recovery was driven by strong demand for air travel and strategic cost-cutting initiatives.

However, rising fuel costs and labour disputes have put pressure on the company, with its share price dropping to AUD 6.00 by September 2024, representing a 9% year-to-date decline. Despite these challenges, Qantas continues to attract investor interest with 3 million shares traded daily, indicating confidence in its long-term recovery.

What’s Behind Flight Centre (ASX: FLT)’s Share Price Volatility?

Flight Centre Travel Group Ltd (ASX: FLT) has experienced significant volatility since the pandemic. The share price rose from AUD 18.00 in early 2022 to AUD 22.50 in March 2023, driven by increasing travel demand and the easing of global lockdowns.

However, by September 2024, the share price had dropped to AUD 15.00, reflecting concerns over rising costs and economic uncertainty, leading to a 17% year-to-date decline. Despite this volatility, the stock’s average daily trading volume of 1 million shares shows that investors are still actively trading, likely in anticipation of future gains as economic conditions improve.

What Does the Future Hold for ASX Travel Stocks?

While the COVID-19 pandemic brought the travel industry to a standstill, ASX travel stocks have shown varying levels of recovery. Webjet, Corporate Travel Management, Qantas, and Flight Centre have all faced unique challenges, from rising costs to fluctuating demand. Although their share prices have not fully returned to pre-pandemic levels, these companies are positioned to benefit from further recovery in travel demand, especially once inflationary pressures ease.

For investors, these travel stocks may offer long-term growth potential, particularly as global travel stabilises. The next few years will be key in determining how well these companies adapt and thrive in the post-pandemic world.
